Last week, I was backing up my photos, because I love each one of them…okay, not true, but I am not discriminating enough..Anyway, I decided to try one thing..hit delete, and even though it warned me, I said, “Oh, yeah, sure. I know what I am doing….CLICK!”
And then they were gone. You know that sinking feeling you get? Yeah, that one. I had it. I tried to be cool. But then I gave up cool and went and bought recovery software, ran it…and recovered 70,000 jpeg files.
Seventy. Thousand.
And proceeded to spend the next 20 gazillion days looking at each file. Well, until I realized that I only wanted to recover the large files or I’d be left with such low resolution that it wouldn’t matter if I recovered it or not…
Long story short, I saw not only photos I’d lost, but photos I’d forgotten about. Like this one from Rosas Farms. (THE place in Central Florida for grass-fed beef–and more. Just check out the website.)
I love this sign because it just sums up the open door policy I would like to live by every day.

I have been trying to sort our photos recently, both real, old ones (gasp!) and digital. I am not doing very well as every single one is a memory and it seems just wrong to throw them out…

Oh, this has me groaning. I have too many photos and have simply lost track of them. It pains me to think about it.

I still haven't got over double exposing my honeymoon photos due to a film mix up (remember film?) and that was 16 years ago. I also find it hard to delete anything but the most out of focus, rubbish shots – glad to know I'm not alone. Just found your blog – clicked a link soley for the title…I adore that movie. Glad I visited for your refreshing, vibrant style.

Christine. Okay, so here's what I did. In iPhoto, the photos are divided into Events and Photos. The events has the photos sorted by into thumbnails, which are sorted by dates. Photos shows ALL the photos sorted by dates. Then there's another category for Albums. And I had several.
I was backing up section by section or event by event and it was going slowly. I thought: oh, hey, lets get rid of some stuff and see if the computer will go faster.
I selected ALL the photos under the PHOTOS heading and selected delete, FIGURING I WOULD STILL HAVE PHOTOS IN EVENTS AND ALBUMS. Note this, too: I DID NOT DO A TEST RUN TO DELETE JUST ONE DATE THAT DIDN'T MATTER TO ME.
End result. When I deleted photos in PHOTOS, I also deleted photos in Events. I deleted photos in Photos. I deleted photos in ALBUMS. AND I deleted photos THAT HAD BEEN SHARED WITH MY PAGE AT MOBILE ME.
I did not lose photos that I had "uploaded" to Mobile Me, just those that I had published using the share command.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how NOT to delete your photos.
